Turning Unused Basement Space into a Home Theater
Many people dream of the idea of having a home theater yet think that it is something beyond their budget. Often this is because they believe it involves adding onto their home which will be an expensive exercise. The good news is that there may be a more affordable way to make that dream come true. If you have an existing basement that you are not using, this could be a space that you could convert with minimal cost into a stylish home theater.
Why Is the Basement an Ideal Venue for a Home Theater?
The obvious answer to this question is that most basements have few windows. Some basements don’t have any windows at all. This means you would not have to make much effort to darken the room and block out the natural light in order to watch movies. Another reason that basements make good home theaters is because they are underneath your home; as a result, the noise from the sound system does not carry as easily. This means that family members working in other parts of the house will not be disturbed even if you have the volume up high. There is also a smaller area to soundproof. Most likely, it will just be the access door and you won't have to soundproof walls, floorboards or ceilings. Having a home theater in your basement means you can happily watch your movies without disturbing the peace. In terms of cost, the distinct advantage is that you will not need to make many structural changes to your home. The renovations are likely to be simple and inexpensive which makes it something well worth considering.
How to Go About Converting Your Basement
If you hope to convert your basement, you first need to clean out and measure the area. If, like most people, your basement is a storage space, this could be quite a major task. A simple solution is to have a garage sale or make some serious donations to charities. If there are still some sentimental items that you want to keep, you can incorporate some cupboards and storage space into the design of your basement renovations. In this way, you can hold on to your favored items and still have a living area that is neat and tidy. Once the area has been cleared out, you need to measure the area to see how much space you have to work with. Keep in mind that if you want a large screen, you need to be able to view the screen from some distance. Essentially, the size of the room will define the size of the screen you can install. At this stage, it is advisable to get in touch with a local renovations contractor. Their experience in the industry is invaluable. They can help you with the design and layout of the room and make suggestions as to which materials would be both practical and affordable.
What Will You Need to Renovate Your Basement?
The extent of the renovation will largely depend on the condition of your basement. If there are already solid floors and walls then you may not need to change much structurally. If you have a large budget, however, you may want to install under-floor heating to make the room more comfortable. There is also ventilation to consider. If there are no windows in the basement, the air supply to the area could be diminished. Air ducts or ventilation may need to be installed so people don’t become drowsy when watching movies in your new home theater. You may also want to install carpets or laminate flooring so the area looks more like a room and less like a basement. If you are on a tight budget, rugs provide a good solution. For the walls, you may need to re-plaster, paint or tile them. A modern trend is to use stone tiles that create a fireplace-type feel in a room. If you only need to paint, you may want to consider darker shades on the walls that will make the room look cozier. A nice feature to have is lighting that can be controlled remotely. This means that you can settle down on the sofa and then be able to dim the light without having to get up again. At the end of the movie, you also won’t stub your toe when you get back up to switch on the light again.
